MAROON & GOLD EFFORTS PAY OFF: SEAT LICENSE SALES TAX RELIEF OF OVER $1 MILLION FOR ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Supporters of the University of Minnesota have long advocated for the importance of exempting preferred seating ticket donations to collegiate events from state sales tax.

After years of work - and the leadership of lead authors Representative Mohamud Noor and Senator Greg Clausen - Maroon & Gold Rising is proud to have led the charge on behalf of the University at the Capitol in establishing the Collegiate Preferred Seating Exemption provision in the Tax Bill that passed the legislature today!

Representative Noor said, “I was excited to work with the Maroon & Gold Rising team to bring the sales tax exemption forward this session. This will bring much-needed resources, providing more opportunities for students at the University of Minnesota.”

The support of Speaker of the House Hortman, Senate Majority Leader Gazelka, and House Majority Leader Winkler was critical. Other instrumental legislators in making this a reality were Tax Committee Chairs Nelson (Senate) and Marquardt (House) and Senators Bakk, Hoffman, and Jasinski.

Senator Clausen was particularly proud of the impact the exemption will provide Minnesota’s universities and colleges. “The resulting savings of the exemption will directly benefit the University, providing more than $1 Million per year of additional scholarships, wellness and academic costs for both women’s and men’s athletic students at higher education institutions across the state.”

Thank you to all of our supporters and advocates that helped make this a reality for student athletes in Minnesota!
